In a stark warning about the escalating climate crisis, renowned environmental lawyer Rizwana Hasan has stated that Bangladesh may need to redraw its national map due to the impending threats posed by rising sea levels. Speaking at a recent event, she emphasized that a one-meter rise in sea level by mid-century could submerge 21 coastal districts, displacing millions and severely impacting agriculture and aquaculture.
Hasan highlighted that the intrusion of saline water into rivers used for farming and fish cultivation would devastate local economies and food security. She urged immediate action to mitigate these risks, including strengthening coastal defenses, implementing sustainable land management practices, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The environmental advocate also called for international cooperation and support to address the challenges faced by Bangladesh, one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. She stressed the importance of integrating climate adaptation strategies into national development plans to safeguard the country’s future.
Hasan’s warning serves as a critical reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive climate action to protect Bangladesh’s people, economy, and territorial integrity from the looming threats of climate change.
